Status as the Forest Service lists it, read on November 4, 2026. Dated closures change the label on their own days.

El Yunque is a national forest run by the US Forest Service, not a national park. You enter the PR-191 recreation corridor free, without a ticket. El Portal Rainforest Center at km 4 charges a separate $8 fee from age 16.
Entry to El Yunque’s PR-191 corridor is free, with no ticket required. You pay $8 per person for El Portal Rainforest Center from age 16. Children through age 15 enter the center free. Interagency pass holders pay $4 for the center.
You need no reservation or ticket for El Yunque’s PR-191 corridor. When parking fills, entry pauses at La Coca Falls, about km 8.1. Parking is allowed only in designated areas. Yokahú Tower and Juan Diego each have a 30-minute parking limit.
El Yunque is 30.2 miles from Old San Juan by road, measured to El Portal. Old San Juan to El Portal takes about 49 minutes without traffic. SJU airport to El Portal is 23.2 miles by road. SJU airport to El Portal takes about 41 minutes without traffic.
No. The Forest Service lists La Mina Trail and La Mina Falls as closed for construction, with no reopening date.
El Yunque’s PR-191 corridor hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The PR-191 gate closes at 5 p.m. sharp. You should start leaving by 4:45 p.m., at least 15 minutes before closing. Your final trail walk needs to fit that departure time.
We do not recommend Uber for El Yunque. La Coca Gate and El Portal, at km 4, are not authorized drop-off or pick-up points for rideshare apps. Cabs need a permit to enter the forest. Arrange your ride back before you go, because the Forest Service says visitors have walked for hours looking for one.
You pronounce El Yunque “el YOON-keh,” with the stress on YOON. The name is usually traced to the Taíno word yuké, meaning white land, for peaks covered in clouds. The Spanish word yunque also means anvil.
